Staying motivated

My biggest problem isn't staying motivated overall - my pants being looser does that for me. My problem is working out. I have a gym membership but I don't really like to go because the girls are all tiny and the guys are all huge from pumping iron. I have a stationary bike that I ride sometimes while I'm waiting for dinner to cook, but aside from that I don't do a whole lot. And I know I need to.

I don't have cable, so unfortunately I can't get Fit TV - but I do have several workouts on DVD that I need to start doing. Do you tend to do workouts at night, in the morning, during lunch? I'm a graduate student without a lot of time and I feel like I can never get enough time together to workout. Maybe I need to start scheduling workout time like I schedule everything else.

And while I think I just solved my own problem by thinking about it some, I do have one question for people:

What are one or two fun things you do for exercise?

Hi,
One of my favorite suggestions is playing Dance Dance Revolution. It's fun, you can stay in your house and work out in just a sports bra and shorts and not worry about anyone giving you dirty looks, and there is ENDLESS AWESOME 80s music!

The version I have is for a playstation 2 (they make it for all modern gaming systems, but we're old school!) and has a "workout" mode. You can put in your weight, and how long you want to work out, and it will keep making you hop around until you're exhausted. A 20 minute workout burns at LEAST 300 or so calories- probably more. It's the same as jumping rope or other high intensity cardio exercises, but so much more fun :)

Let me know if you need any more info or game suggestions!

Hi Mhray,

I am starting to struggle with that just a little bit right now. i have a gym membership, but since the weather is starting to get nicer, I want to be OUTDOORS!! See what kind of classes your gym offers--they are so fun and don't always feel like you're working out to work out. Plus, the classes always offer a variety of new moves and ways to get the heart rate up.

A suggestion to you is to try to think of going to the gym as a second job. I have told many of my friends that losing weight is like a full-time job because I always have to be conscious of what I'm doing. Schedule in your calendar your gym time like it is any other appointment for work--that way it's harder to skip out!

Fun suggestions....I don't know how "fun" this sounds to you, but when the weather is gorgeous, I just feel the urge to get out and enjoy the fresh air and people watch. Going for a walk around the neighborhood has been a really fun time for me, and I do it with my Dad, so it's fun and gives us a chance to talk. Finding a friend to do a workout with is fun because it gives you a chance to talk and walk/workout at the same time! I also am going to try to take advantage of the outdoors by going to the local park and doing some hiking/trailwalking. It doesn't really feel like work when you have the gorgeous scenery around you. Beth's suggestion of DDR is so fun too! I love that game.

It sounds crazy, but I cancelled my gym membership when I started using the SELF Diet Club. I hadn't used it in awhile, and I couldn't make myself go to the gym once I got off work. So I continued to be depressed because I wasn't using it and was wasting my money. The minute I didn't have that guilty feeling I started working out like 4 times a week from home. I use cardio videos, small weights, and a workout ball. I also check out the videos on-line for variety. I also love to dance and when it's nice outside, I go to trails and parks around my area. This doesn't work for everyone, but it's helped me!
